Having worked with a large number of "traditional" music teachers over the years, Mark knows how restricting and frustrating it can be to do the same things every week - scales, sight-reading, theory, plodding through the same old pieces. While these skills are indeed important (and covered - where necessary - by Mark), Mark takes a very different approach in his lessons.
First of all, he'll have an informal chat with a new student to find out what they'd like to learn, how they'd like to learn it, and if they have any particular styles or artists they'd like to work on. Then, their following lessons will be tailored to them, each week bringing new challenges and exciting tasks. As the student, you'll play a large part in shaping the lesson content with Mark.
You'll work on things like playing-by-ear - a useful skill for every musician - by listening to and playing along with your favourite songs and learning how to discover the melodies, chords and structures. Mark also likes to put a strong emphasis on improvisation - making your own music - working on soloing in a band (or alone!), and making the music you play - or write - more exciting, dynamic and interesting.
For good measure, he'll also throw in some basic skills tuition like Scales, Finger Exercises, Physical Playing Technique (including articulation and control), Composition, Key and Time Signatures, Chords...just to give you a good basis and grounding in your general playing.
